Managed services and colocation for a charter school district
A large Illinois-based charter school district with a small IT staff started with Storcom’s disaster recovery as a service. When its infrastructure needed replacing, Storcom deployed an HPE SimpliVity hyper-converged platform, used its suburban Chicago data center for DR, then moved production there. The district now has very low RPO and RTO and redundant internet egress.

The challenge
The district had a limited IT staff and needed infrastructure that was easy to use and manage, could scale, and stayed available.
The relationship began with Storcom providing disaster recovery as a service from its data center in Chicago’s western suburbs.
When the district’s infrastructure needed updates and new hardware, it asked Storcom to help design the replacement, and we proposed a hyper-converged hardware and software platform.
What Storcom did
We deployed hyper-converged infrastructure in the district’s production data center, providing the storage and compute to run its operations.
In phase one, the district used Storcom’s suburban data center as its disaster recovery site.
In phase two, the district bought additional equipment to replace the infrastructure there and switched production to Storcom’s suburban data center, so DR was no longer hosted in the Chicago data center.
Technology: VMware vSphere, HPE SimpliVity hyper-converged infrastructure and Cisco switching.
The outcome
- Production workloads migrated, with the built-in DR and business continuity of the hyper-converged platform in use.
- A real DR and business continuity capability with very low RPO and RTO in an outage.
- OSPF over a VPLS mesh, with internet egress at either data center so the district stays online if one site loses internet access.
