Off-site storage for the data you keep but rarely touch
Object storage keeps data as objects in flat, scalable buckets reached over the S3 API, which makes it well suited to backups, archives and cold data. Storcom provides S3-compatible object storage as an off-site target, sets object lock so copies can’t be changed or deleted before retention ends, and connects it to Veeam.

What is object storage used for?
Off-site backup copies
A second copy of your backups outside the building, written by Veeam or other backup software that supports S3 targets.
Long-term retention
Monthly and yearly restore points kept for years without filling the fast storage your nightly jobs need.
Tape replacement
No tape rotation, courier pickups or hoping an old cartridge still reads. Restores start from the backup console.
Archives and cold data
Records, exports and logs you must keep but rarely open, moved off primary storage to win back capacity.
How does object lock protect backups from ransomware?
Ransomware crews go after backups first, because deleting them forces a payment. Object lock is an S3 feature that marks each object as unchangeable until a date you set. In compliance mode, nobody can modify or delete it before that date, including an administrator whose credentials were stolen.
That gives you the immutable copy in the 3-2-1-1-0 rule. We set lock periods to match your backup retention, so you’re protected without paying to keep data longer than you intend.
How it works with Veeam
Object storage plugs into the Veeam Backup & Replication setup you already run. Moving older backups off performance storage also makes it easier to retire a primary repository at end of life.
Connect the repository
Storcom object storage is added in Veeam as an S3-compatible repository with immutability turned on.
Tier by policy
With Veeam’s Scale-Out Backup Repository, recent backups stay on fast local storage and older restore points move to the capacity tier on a schedule you set. Copy mode can also send every new backup off-site right away.
Lock and retain
Each restore point is locked for its retention period, then expires on schedule.
Restore and test
Restore files, VMs or whole jobs directly from object storage, and test restores on a schedule so you know they work.
Object storage, tape or local disk: what is the difference?
| Question | Object storage | Tape | Local disk repository |
|---|---|---|---|
| Off-site? | Yes, by design | Only once cartridges are rotated out | No, unless replicated elsewhere |
| Immutable? | Yes, with object lock | Yes, once ejected or with WORM media | Only with a hardened repository |
| How a restore starts | From the backup console | Retrieve, load and catalog cartridges | From the backup console |
| Ongoing effort | Policy reviews | Rotation, couriers, library upkeep | Hardware refresh and capacity planning |
| Best role | Off-site, immutable and long-term copies | Legacy retention you already hold | Fast first restore of recent backups |
A common design keeps recent backups on local disk for speed and sends a locked copy to object storage for off-site and long-term protection.

Frequently asked questions
Is object storage the same as cloud backup?
Not quite. Object storage is where the data lands. Backup software such as Veeam decides what gets copied, how often and how long it’s kept. Storcom can provide both the backup design and the storage, or just the storage target for software you already run.
Does it work with backup software other than Veeam?
Yes, as long as the software can write to an S3-compatible target, which most current backup products can. Storcom confirms compatibility, including object lock support, during design.
Can object storage replace our tape library?
For most teams, yes. Object storage gives you an off-site, immutable copy without tape rotation or courier pickups, and restores start from the backup console. Existing tapes usually stay where they are until their retention period ends, and Storcom helps plan any data you want migrated.
How do immutable copies get removed when retention ends?
Each object’s lock expires on the date set when it was written. After that, your backup software’s retention policy removes it as normal. Lock periods are set to match retention, so you aren’t storing data longer than you intend.
Is object storage fast enough for restores?
It’s slower than local flash, which is why it usually holds the off-site or older copy rather than the only one. Recent backups stay on fast local storage for quick restores, while object storage covers off-site, long-term and ransomware recovery needs.
