Azure file share migration for a Chicago law firm

A Chicago-based law firm specializing in aviation law kept large file shares on older, unsupported Windows servers in 2 major U.S. cities. Storcom designed a migration to Microsoft Azure Files using Azure File Sync, so the firm no longer manages local file servers and has a Cloud Enablement Roadmap for moving the rest of its data to the cloud.

The challenge

The firm kept a large amount of data in Windows file shares on older Windows servers in 2 major U.S. cities, and it needed to get off those unsupported operating systems.

It also wanted to understand how to use public cloud options, and had struggled to architect a solution on its own.

What Storcom did

We designed a solution using Microsoft Azure Files and Azure File Sync that moves all of the firm’s legacy file share data into the public cloud, so it no longer manages local resources for file sharing.

Azure File Sync bridged the transition while the firm upgraded desktop operating systems to the required version.

The design supports SMB 3.0, with the goal of making every file share directly accessible in the cloud.

The outcome

  • A manageable Cloud Enablement Roadmap for getting all of the firm’s data into the cloud.
  • Better protection of the firm’s data and more efficient data management.
  • No local servers left to manage for file sharing.
