Tiered storage and DR for an American tools manufacturer

A large American designer, manufacturer and marketer of high-end tools needed more capacity on a regular basis, plus archive and DR plans. Storcom built a multi-tiered storage design with automated data movement, data protection and on-premises and off-site DR. Over several phases, critical jobs run faster and the company runs regular DR tests.

The challenge

The company’s demand for IT infrastructure capacity grew on a regular basis.

It wanted a solution that was highly scalable, reliable, easy to administer and cost-effective across the data lifecycle, with a roadmap covering current needs, long-term archive data and data protection.

It also needed to run disaster recovery and business continuity at one of its other data centers.

What Storcom did

We evaluated the company’s needs and developed an IT strategy and roadmap.

Tier 0: high-performance, low-latency storage for the most demanding business-critical applications.

Mid-tier storage for the bulk of the data used regularly, and an archival tier that keeps infrequently accessed data online.

Hierarchical storage management (HSM) automates data movement between tiers.

A data protection design with on-premises and off-site DR and business continuity, delivered with Recover by Storcom.

The outcome

  • A multi-phase project that evolved over a number of years.
  • Shorter processing times on critical jobs.
  • Better control over how data is maintained and protected.
  • Regular DR tests and greater confidence in recovering from a disaster. Storcom still oversees the process and helped build and maintain the DR runbook.
